Overlaying Time Scales and Persistence Estimation in GARCH(1,1) Models

چکیده

A common finding in the empirical literature is that financial volatility exhibits high persistence, or slow mean reversion of the order of months. We present evidence that financial volatility data contains more than a single time scale. After showing that the expectation of the sum of the estimates of the autoregressive coefficients of a GARCH(1,1) model is one when there are unknown parameter changes, we explore the phenomenon in simulations. For parameter changes within realistic ranges for stock-price volatility we obtain global estimates close to integration while the average data-generating mean reversion is of the order of a few days. Spectral analysis of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P500 index between 1985 and 2001 reveals a short time scale of the magnitude of 5-10 days present in the data. Thus, two different time scales exist in the data, one of the order of months corresponding to different volatility regimes, and one of the order of days corresponding to the average mean reversion within regimes. ∗It is a pleasure to thank George Papanicolaou for his invitation to Stanford and many discussions. I am grateful to Caio Almeida, Arnold Kim, Mordecai Kurz, Jonathan Mattingly, and Knut Sølna for many helpful comments. Any remaining errors are mine.

Overlaying Time Scales and Persistence Estimation of Financial Volatility Data

A common finding in the empirical literature is that financial volatility exhibits high persistence, or slow mean reversion of the order of months. We present evidence that financial volatility data contains more than a single time scale. When occasional parameter changes are not accounted for in global GARCH(1,1) estimations, they lead to an estimated persistence far above the average data-gen...

Comparing the performance of GARCH (p,q) models with different methods of estimation for forecasting crude oil market volatility

The use of GARCH models to characterize crude oil price volatility is widely observed in the empirical literature. In this paper the efficiency of six univariate GARCH models and two methods of estimation the parameters for forecasting oil price volatility are examined and the best method for forecasting crude oil price volatility of Brent market is determined. All the examined models in this p...

One-factor-Garch models for German stocks: Estimation and forecasting

This paper presents theoretical models and their empirical results for the return and variance dynamics of German stocks. A factor structure is used in order to allow for a parsimonious modeling of the rst two moments of returns. Dynamic factor models with GARCH dynamics (GARCH(1,1)-M, IGARCH(1,1)-M, Nonlinear Asymmetric GARCH(1,1)-M and Glosten-Jagannathan-Runkle GARCH(1,1)-M) and three di ere...

مدل‌سازی و پیش‌بینی نوسانات بازار سهام با استفاده از مدل انتقالی گارچ مارکف

In this study we compare a set of Markov Regime-Switching GARCH models in terms of their ability to forecast the Tehran stock market volatility at different time intervals. SW-GARCH models have been used to avoid the excessive persistence that usually found in GARCH models. In SW-GARCH models all parameters are allowed to switch between a low or high volatility regimes. Both Gaussian and fat-...

The Stock Returns Volatility based on the GARCH (1,1) Model: The Superiority of the Truncated Standard Normal Distribution in Forecasting Volatility

I n this paper, we specify that the GARCH(1,1) model has strong forecasting volatility and its usage under the truncated standard normal distribution (TSND) is more suitable than when it is under the normal and student-t distributions. On the contrary, no comparison was tried between the forecasting performance of volatility of the daily return series using the multi-step ahead forec...
